Abode Systems, known for its DIY smart home and home security solutions, has launched its first-ever Apple TV app alongside an upgraded version of its Android TV app. This new software aims to enhance the user experience by allowing Abode customers to manage their self-installed systems from the comfort of their couches, utilizing their TV or set-top box remote. The company already offers applications for smartphones, smartwatches, computers, and tablets.
With the new apps, users can monitor their home security systems and control smart devices such as lights and thermostats through the Abode dashboard. A standout feature is the ability to view live feeds from up to four Abode security cameras or video doorbells directly on connected TVs. Users can also access recorded clips and, with AC-powered cameras equipped for 24/7 recording, easily navigate a 10-day timeline to jump to specific events.
However, it is worth noting that Abode’s cameras do not support Apple’s HomeKit Security Video platform. In addition to the Apple TV app, Abode has revamped its existing Android TV application, which provides a comparable set of features. While the menus and general layout may appear slightly different on Android TV, users can expect the same camera functionalities.
They will also have the capability to control their Abode system and connected devices directly from the Android TV interface. Currently, Abode has no plans to develop apps for other television operating systems, such as Amazon Fire TV, LG’s WebOS, Roku OS, or Samsung’s Tizen OS, but the company has not discounted the possibility for future development. For its security services, Abode offers two paid plans that provide up to 10 days of event-based camera recordings.
The Standard plan is available for $8 per month or $75 per year, while the Pro plan, which includes professional monitoring and cellular backup in case of a lost internet connection, costs $26 per month or $240 per year. To enable 24/7 recording for an unlimited number of AC-powered Abode security cameras, users must subscribe to either the Standard or Pro plan, with this service available for an additional $10 per month or $110 per year.
