Microsoft is currently in the testing phase of two new applications: People and File Search. Interestingly, the People app has previously been discontinued due to a lack of user interest. Initially launched with Windows 8, it is making a comeback as part of Microsoft’s renewed focus on enhancing user experience. Both applications are integrated within Windows but are exclusively available to users who have Microsoft 365 applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Currently, they are under trial in the Microsoft 365 Insider program for Business and Enterprise license holders. Shilpa Patel from Microsoft noted that users will recognize familiar operations within these apps, although they will be presented in a much faster and streamlined manner. Users can also pin the apps to their taskbar, ensuring easy access amidst a busy workflow. The File Search app seems to refine existing features in Microsoft 365 by providing users with enhanced search capabilities for their documents.
Unlike the existing Office app, which lists recently accessed files, the File Search app allows for filtering and searching by content. Additionally, users can preview and share documents, similar to actions available in File Explorer. As for the People app, it aims to streamline workplace interactions by allowing quick access to a select group of colleagues directly from the taskbar. Users are afforded the ability to message coworkers or gain insights into their roles and responsibilities without navigating away from their current tasks.
This is a part of Microsoft’s shift towards bolstering their business ecosystem through applications like Outlook and Teams, facilitating better collaboration. However, the big question remains: will these mini-apps succeed where their predecessors faltered? History suggests a degree of skepticism regarding their long-term viability.
