Microsoft to Restrict Teams Access for Users Who Neglect App Updates This Week

When Microsoft launches a new version of the Teams app, users have a 90-day window to install the update. Failing to do so will result in a “blocking page” appearing, which necessitates the update before users can continue using the app.

Starting at the 30-day mark, Teams will send recurring reminders about the pending update. For those who prefer not to upgrade, there is the option to switch to the web version of Teams.

Microsoft clarifies that the enforcement of this update policy is designed to protect users by ensuring they have the latest security updates and compliance features. The Teams app updates automatically by default, which efficiently keeps most clients up to date without additional effort required from customers.

The Teams desktop client operates under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, mandating that it remains current. Users will experience different notifications based on how outdated their app version is.

Specifically, alerts will occur within the app for versions that are 30 to 90 days out of date. After 90 days, a blocking page will appear, providing users with options to update, reach out to their IT administrator, or switch to the web version of Teams.

For users of the Windows desktop app, this policy will take effect starting April 11, 2025. In virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments, the updates will begin on May 6, 2025, while macOS users will see this change commence on May 15, 2025.
