Cybersecurity researcher John Tuckner from Secure Annex has uncovered 57 malicious Chrome extensions that are capable of tracking user activities and distributing malware. Among these, the extension that stands out is Cuponomia: Coupons and Cashback, which boasts over 700,000 users.
Two other notable extensions, Fire Shield Extension Protection and Total Safety for Chrome, each have around 300,000 users. Many individuals have been tricked into downloading these harmful extensions, often through deceptive advertising and false promises of enhanced security or opportunities to earn real money.
While the malicious extensions present on the Chrome Web Store have been removed at the time of this report, the challenge remains in addressing those that are disseminated via alternative channels. If you suspect that you have unknowingly installed a malicious Chrome extension, it is crucial to take immediate action.
Uninstall the suspicious extension without delay and change passwords for any accounts associated with it, as your information may have been compromised. Being proactive about your cybersecurity is essential in today’s digital landscape, and keeping your browser free from malicious extensions is a key step in protecting your personal data.
Always be cautious when downloading extensions and ensure they come from reputable sources. Ensure you stay informed about best practices for enhancing your online security, especially when using web browsers.
