In 2015, a tool was integrated into Firefox, and in 2017, it was acquired by Mozilla, continuing to operate as an independent subsidiary. However, it has been announced that Pocket will cease operations on July 8, 2025. Users of Pocket will have the opportunity to export their data until October 8, 2025, after which Mozilla will permanently delete all user data.
Additionally, starting in July, the company will cancel all paid Pocket subscriptions and provide prorated refunds to those who prepaid for annual plans. Currently, both the Pocket extension and app have been removed and are no longer available for new installations. However, anyone who had previously installed either will still be able to redownload them until the October deadline.
Mozilla stated that the decision to discontinue Pocket stems from the evolving nature of how people save and consume content on the web. The focus will now shift more fully to improving the Firefox browser. Mozilla aims to shape the next era of the internet by introducing features such as vertical tabs, smart search, and various AI-powered tools.
Their goal is to create a browser that is personal, powerful, and proudly independent. In addition to closing Pocket, Mozilla will also be shutting down Fakespot, the fake reviews detector they acquired in 2023. The Fakespot-powered Review Checker feature in Firefox will stop functioning on June 10, 2025.
This strategic move showcases Mozilla’s commitment to enhancing their primary product while adapting to the changing landscape of online content consumption.
