Opera Neon Browser Introduces Integrated AI Features with Subscription Model

Opera is reviving Opera Neon, a browser concept first launched in 2017, and enhancing it with the latest technological trend: agentic AI. This AI assistant can autonomously perform tasks assigned to it by users. Opera Neon aims to function like a regular browser, but with integrated local AI for private chat and task execution.

It will also connect to a remote server that acts as a workspace for AI creation tools. Unlike most browsers, Opera Neon will require a paid subscription, although the exact pricing is yet to be disclosed, and potential users will need to join a waitlist. Opera has a history of embracing innovative ideas, previously pioneering VPNs among other features.

The original version of Opera Neon introduced unique visual design elements like icon-based bookmarks and vertical tabs, but it struggled to gain traction, which was not necessarily the intended outcome. The company envisions the new Opera Neon as a “cloud computer” capable of operating more effectively by understanding user preferences. The subscription model likely supports the maintenance and operation of this remote service.

Opera has emphasized that the AI will analyze web pages through the DOM tree and layout data, ensuring that user information remains securely on their local devices. The success of Opera Neon largely hinges on its agentic technology. Previous demonstrations of similar shopping agents were conceptually strong, but user acceptance and trust in AI decisions remain uncertain.

Additionally, the functionality of creating content through the cloud is still an open question. Opera describes its cloud service as an “orchestra conductor” that orchestrates task execution tailored to user needs. However, the challenges AI companies face in meeting promises and delivering consistent results raise skepticism.

Even if users accept the associated risks, they must also see value in what Opera Neon offers. Will they find it worth paying a subscription for creative projects, such as developing personalized games or applications? Only time will tell if Opera Neon realizes its ambitious vision.
