Amazon has initiated a gradual rollout of its new AI-enhanced version of Alexa, known as Alexa+. However, feedback from users who have experienced the new features remains surprisingly scarce.
Reports indicate that Andrew Jassy, during an earnings call, mentioned that users seem to be enjoying the new version, but those who have tested it are largely silent. The cautious approach from Amazon stands in stark contrast to the upbeat presentation at the February Alexa+ event in New York.
At that time, the company projected a sense of enthusiasm about the new AI capabilities, announcing a subscription price of $19.99 per month or free access for Prime members. They also mentioned a public preview set to commence in March, showcasing Alexa’s new functionalities, which include intelligent control of smart devices, shopping assistance, travel bookings, text messaging, recipe suggestions, and more.
It’s important to note that Amazon intended for the initial public preview to involve a small group, prioritizing Echo Show display owners. Given the company’s optimistic narrative surrounding Alexa+ just a few months ago, the slow pace of the rollout is puzzling.
All major tech companies are exhibiting caution as they integrate advanced generative AI into their voice assistants, reflecting a broader trend in the industry. The announcement of the new Alexa in September 2023 was subsequently followed by several months of uncertainty and some negative developments.
While Amazon may eventually surprise us with an expanded rollout of Alexa+, the current situation remains unusually quiet as the AI preview unfolds.
