Last year, AT&T experienced a significant data breach, exposing sensitive information of millions of U.S. customers. This breach not only included account numbers but also full names, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, birth dates, and social security numbers. Alarmingly, the stolen data resurfaced later, revealing that previously encrypted birthdates and social security numbers were now available in plain text.
This situation is concerning as it provides potential identity thieves with everything they need to target individuals more effectively. While I have some reservations about the risks posed by this data breach, I see it as an opportunity to bolster my defenses against identity theft and scams. If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time for you to do the same.
To help prevent identity theft, consider implementing these four steps. First, keep in mind that a full name, address, phone number, birthdate, and social security number can lead to significant damage. If you ever need a credit card or loan, consider temporarily unfreezing your credit file during the application process.
Next, create an IRS identity protection PIN (IP PIN) that must accompany your tax return to prevent fraudulent filing. Additionally, freeze your banking report, which functions similarly to a credit report. Lastly, establish an account PIN for your mobile number to protect against unauthorized transfers that hackers might use to compromise linked accounts.
It’s also essential to protect yourself from scammers with these three strategies. First, avoid clicking on unfamiliar links that don’t direct you to trusted websites. Second, only install well-known and vetted apps, as infostealer malware can compromise your private information.
Lastly, enable two-factor authentication for your key accounts, or consider using passkeys to enhance your security. Given that many individuals have their information compromised on the dark web, it’s crucial to stay vigilant. The repercussions of identity theft can be costly and emotionally draining, making ongoing defense a priority.
