As the 2025 school year comes to a close, students returning in the fall will be greeted by a new learning assistant: Google Gemini for Education. At the recent International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference, Google unveiled this innovative AI teaching tool designed to enhance educational experiences.
One of the standout features of Google Gemini is its capacity for educators to create their own personalized AI “Gems,” which can serve as specialized tutors to assist students in grasping new concepts. In addition to this, Google NotebookLM enables students to upload documents and receive audio summaries through a feature called Audio Overviews.
Recently, Google expanded this offering to include Video Overviews, adding a visual dimension to learning materials. The introduction of Video Overviews includes the use of short 8-second video clips generated by the Veo 3 text-to-video tool.
This feature is set to help educators engage students more effectively, blending traditional teaching methods with modern digital elements, including the creation of memes that resonate with younger audiences. However, this shift towards AI in education raises important ethical considerations, particularly regarding its implications for testing and academic integrity.
Google is clearly aiming to make AI as commonplace in education as laptops. With these advancements poised to reshape the learning landscape, it will be interesting to see how teachers and students adapt to this new technology when school resumes in the fall.
