The latest update to Firefox has elevated the browser to version 140, introducing several new features and enhancements. Significant improvements include a more resource-efficient internal translation feature and enhanced flexibility for pinned tabs. Additionally, the update addresses multiple security vulnerabilities.
Both Firefox ESR and the Tor Browser received important security enhancements as well. Looking ahead, Mozilla plans to release Firefox version 141, along with Firefox ESR versions 140.1, 128.13, and 115.26 on July 22nd, 2025. One of the notable updates in Firefox 140 is its local translation feature, which now only translates content currently visible in the browser window.
As users scroll to previously unseen sections of a page, the translation occurs for that new content. This modification significantly reduces resource consumption and boosts performance, with users only needing to adjust the separator line. In addition, Firefox has expanded its support for search engines.
Users can easily add new search engines by right-clicking in the search field on supported websites and selecting “Add search engine.” Notably, Perplexity, an AI-based search engine requested by users, has been included as a default option for those in the U.S. using version 139 and above. Mozilla has identified a particular vulnerability as high risk, as it could be exploited by an attacker to provoke a crash and execute injected code.
Other fixed vulnerabilities have been categorized as medium or low risk. For Firefox ESR and the Tor Browser, Firefox ESR 140 mirrors the regular version 140 but will focus solely on security updates and critical bug fixes moving forward. Mozilla will maintain support for both Firefox ESR 128 and ESR 140 until August 19th, at which point support for Firefox ESR 115 may also conclude unless extended.
Lastly, the Tor Browser 14.5.4, based on Firefox ESR 128.12.0, incorporates the new NoScript version 13.0.8, along with several security fixes from Firefox 140. An update for Tor Browser 13.5 is also available for Windows 7/8.1 and macOS 10.12 to 10.14, based on Firefox ESR 115.25.0 and featuring NoScript 13.0.8.
