Google has announced that starting July 7, 2025, Gemini AI will gain access to a variety of new applications, including messaging platforms like WhatsApp. This change will apply to users regardless of whether they actively use Gemini as an app assistant. Many users have raised concerns due to the vague wording of the announcement, especially regarding data privacy and the suddenness of this update.
The fact that Gemini comes pre-installed on many smartphones adds to users’ apprehension. In response to these concerns, Google provided clarification through Android Authority. They emphasized that this update is beneficial, allowing users to rely on Gemini for common tasks on their devices, such as sending messages, making phone calls, and setting timers, even when Gemini Apps Activity is disabled.
When this feature is turned off, user chats will not be reviewed or utilized for improving AI models. Additionally, users can disconnect Gemini from apps at any time. This change means that Gemini will function more like a local assistant on Android devices, enabling it to assist with basic tasks without requiring the Gemini Apps Activity to be active.
According to Google, the AI will not have access to private communications. For those who remain skeptical about this update, there are options to disable the Gemini Apps Activity. If Gemini is installed on your smartphone, you can easily turn off this feature by selecting your profile picture and choosing Gemini Apps Activity.
It’s wise to revisit this setting on July 7 to ensure it remains disabled. Alternatively, if Gemini was pre-installed, the most effective approach may be to disable the app, as complete uninstallation is not possible since it’s a system app.
