Microsoft Enhances Office 365 Security to Combat ‘Email Bombing’ Attacks

Microsoft has announced the rollout of a new feature in Office 365 aimed at combating email bombing, a cyberattack that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Email bombing occurs when a large volume of emails is sent to a target’s inbox, making it difficult for the recipient to access important messages amid the flood of irrelevant ones. This abuse not only obscures legitimate communications but can also overwhelm email systems.

To address this issue, Microsoft is introducing a ‘Mail Bombing’ detection feature through Microsoft Defender for Office 365. This new capability will automatically identify and block email bombing attacks, thereby enhancing the ability of security teams to maintain visibility on real threats to their email systems. The Mail Bombing Detection feature is set to become available soon, with the rollout beginning in late June and expected to be completed by late July.

The good news for users is that this feature will be enabled by default, meaning that any incoming email bombs should be directed straight to the trash folder, relieving users from the burden of wading through an inundated inbox. This proactive measure illustrates Microsoft’s commitment to improving email security and user experience in Office 365. By implementing this feature, the company aims to better protect users from disruptive and damaging email attacks.

The effectiveness of this solution could significantly enhance the overall safety of digital communications within the Office 365 environment.
