In 2019, hackers successfully breached AT&T’s security, stealing account information from approximately 74 million landline customers, including sensitive social security numbers. Surprisingly, AT&T did not reveal this breach until early 2024, after the stolen data appeared on the dark web. In the wake of this revelation, many individuals came together to take legal action against AT&T, resulting in a significant settlement.
Currently, a total of $177 million is set to be distributed among affected customers, which includes both current and former AT&T subscribers. Of this amount, $148 million is allocated for those impacted by the 2019 breach, while another $28 million addresses the breaches that occurred in 2024. Compensation for affected individuals will vary based on the extent of the damage they suffered.
Those with documentation proving direct damages related to the AT&T leaks can receive higher payouts. For instance, landline customers affected by the 2019 breach may claim up to $5,000, whereas wireless customers impacted by the 2024 breach can claim up to $2,500. Eligible customers can expect to receive notifications via physical mail or email starting on August 4, 2025, with the notification process concluding by October 17, 2025.
It is important to note that all claims must be submitted by November 18, 2025. The final approval of the settlement is scheduled for December 3, 2025, and this must occur before any payments can begin. In addition to awaiting the notice, individuals are urged to take proactive measures to protect themselves against the consequences of these significant data leaks.
Recommended actions include strengthening passwords—especially those compromised or reused across multiple sites—monitoring financial accounts, staying alert to potential scams, and keeping abreast of news related to data breaches. In today’s world, these precautions have become increasingly essential.
