Discord Requires Face and ID Verification for Some Users to Confirm Their Age

The verification process on Discord allows users to confirm their identity either by scanning their face with a webcam or by using their mobile device to visit a QR code and upload a photo of their ID card. This is a one-time requirement, although users have options for re-verification or manual review if they encounter any issues.

However, those who are automatically flagged as too young during the verification might face a ban. Discord describes this age verification process as “experimental,” aimed at limiting access to sexually explicit content and other materials intended for specific age groups.

According to the support page, age verification is necessary to access media that has been blurred by the sensitive media filter and to adjust sensitive media filter settings. Importantly, The Verge reports that Discord has stated that none of the information collected during the verification process is stored by the company or its vendors.

Currently, this age verification experiment is being conducted only in the UK and Australia. The company has not made any official statement regarding whether it plans to expand this feature to additional regions in the future.

This initiative reflects Discord’s commitment to user safety and adherence to content regulations. As testers and users engage with this age verification system, its effectiveness and impact on user experience will likely be closely monitored.
